Join us Saturday, April 10th, 2010 for a benefit art exhibition in honor of the passing of Mary Ruth Sampson, mother of legendary P-Funk artist and caricaturist Overton Loyd.
Detroit-born, Overton Loyd gained notoriety in the 1970s by designing a plethora of artwork and album covers for the infamous funk band George Clinton / Parliament Funkadelic. In 1980, he broke new ground, winning Billboard Magazine’s “Best Use of Computer Graphics” for the music video “Atomic Dog.”
Overton continues to reinvent himself to this day, inspiring new generations to create breakthroughs in communication by using the arts. Overton Loyd’s intention is to use his medium to transcend our current social and cultural boundaries.
This will be a unique opportunity to see the largest exhibition of Overton’s work in one place. Live music will be provided by Norwood Fisher (of Fishbone) and DJ Phyz Ed.
The event is being thrown by friends and supporters of Overton Loyd. All proceeds will go towards expenses encountered during the passing of Overton’s Mom.
For those who cannot attend, we are accepting check and Paypal donations (paypal link to come). If you would like to mail a donation for the event, please make the check payable to :

A personal message from Overton Loyd:
Welcome to the Benefit Art Exhibition page for Overton Loyd.
When my mother Mary faced her final bout with cancer at the beginning of March, Nefertiti Angelica Strong, Michael Masssenburg and the nucleus of Downtown LA’s artist community appeared to support my efforts to be by my mother’s side. As I flew to Louisiana, my entire circle of artists-friends and musicians rushed to create this benefit to help with expenses while I held my mothers hand.
Sadly, Mary Ruth Sampson passed away peacefully March 20, 2010.
I’m grateful to God that as our family grieves and faces the task of closing out her affairs, the Overton Loyd Benefit Art Exhibition will not only help with expenses, but also give my extremely talented circle of extraordinary friends the opportunity to meet each other and awe in amazement at the quality of their own company.
Although I’m unable to personally attend the event, I will certainly be there in spirit, and perhaps a few surprises may also be in store.
Please email michaelmass@hotmail.com if you have any questions about the event.
Thank you everyone for the avalanche of support.
Warm Regards,
Overton Loyd
