"The 45 Show": a Vinylshuffle Interview

"The 45 Show" a Vinylshuffle Interview

“The 45 Show” Exhibition: a Vinylshuffle Interview by tis1971

The origins of “The 45 Show
Robert Rodriguez stops by to discuss the origins of “The 45 Show” art opening on April 9th in Pomona, CA. Recorded and mixed on Saturday, 3/27/2011 from the vinylshuffle recording studio in San Clemente, CA.

Background:
On April 10th, 2010, legendary P-Funk and fine artist Overton Loyd got together with several friends to hold a benefit art show he created for his mother, Mary Ruth Sampson, who passed away on March 20th of 2010.  The original page for that show can still be seen here:  http://vinylshuffle.com/overton/

Aside from raising money for his mother’s funeral, Overton Loyd had another goal for this closing event:  To bring his talented, loving, and inspirational circle of friends (many who had never met each other) together, in hopes that it might be the start of some amazing collaborations in the future.

Two of those friends, Robert Rodriguez (http://www.wanted-records.com/) and Stephen Tisdale (http://www.vinylshuffle.com/), introduced themselves to LA artist Michael Massenburg (http://michaelmassenburg.daportfolio.com/) that day, and a new collaboration was born.

Today is the eve of the first anniversary of Overton’s show, and today, in Pomona, California from 5-9pm, “The 45 Show” will premiere at the Pomona Art Walk, at 20 Miles East Gallery. (558-A West Second Street, Pomona, California 91767)

In this recording, you can hear a typical Saturday afternoon at the vinylshuffle studio:  Friends gathering together to listen to records, discussing life.  Robert Rodriguez, the owner of LA-based Wanted-Records stopped by as he usually does for an afternoon of sharing records and music together.  This mix is a sampling of the latest records we wanted to share with each other that day (some of which were pulled from a record show Robert visited only hours before).  You can listen in as we play our records, and as Robert shares how the idea for the show was formed (originally as an idea for a single piece of art made from broken 45s), and what it blossomed into, after further discussion with Michael Massenburg (an art show featuring 45 artists, with 45 unique pieces of art centered around vinyl).

This mix, and the “The 45 Show” itself, is dedicated to everyone who participated in Overton’s show; to everyone who directly and indirectly inspired and helped “The 45 Show” take place; and to the 45 artists you will see tonight, who were brought together by vinyl and a deep connection to music.
